Article: How to Tell If Your Jewelry Is Real Gold or Fake

How to Tell If Your Jewelry Is Real Gold or Fake

With gold-plated and imitation jewelry becoming more common, it’s important to know how to spot the difference between real gold and fake or artificial jewelry.

Here are the most reliable ways to find out:

1. Check the Hallmark Stamp

Look for a small stamp on the inside of the ring or clasp area.

Stamp Meaning
24K 99.9% pure gold
22K 91.6% pure gold
18K 75% gold
14K 58.5% gold
10K 41.7% gold
GP / GEP / GF Gold-plated or filled – not real gold

No stamp? The piece may not be real or needs further testing.

2. Magnet Test (Quick Home Trick)

Real gold is not magnetic.

  • Use a small magnet and hold it near your jewelry.

  • If it sticks, the jewelry likely contains iron, nickel, or other base metals.

Caution: Not 100% accurate. Some non-magnetic fakes exist.

3. Acid or Nitric Acid Test (Jeweler’s Test)

Professionals use gold testing kits to see if the metal reacts.

  • Real gold won’t change color

  • Fake gold may turn green, grey, or bubble

Best done by a licensed jeweler — not recommended at home.

4. Weight & Sound

  • Real gold is heavier and denser than fake pieces.

  • Tap two real gold pieces together — they make a deep, soft sound.

  • Fakes sound tinny or feel light and hollow.

5. Professional Appraisal

For expensive or sentimental pieces, visit a trusted jeweler for:

  • Electronic testing

  • Hallmark verification

  • Karat grading
